Taiwan's Liberty Times newspaper said Monday that a leaked Taiwan ministry of defense report found China's Su-30 fighters have an edge over most of Taiwan's fighters.

The report added that only the F-16A/B could draw level with China's best fighters.

DIA assessment points to F-16C/Ds for Taiwan
A U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) assessment seems to suggest that Taiwan needs to buy F-16C/Ds to shore up its air defenses, Defense News reports.

The report said Taiwan has insufficient number of operational fighters that can fend off threats from China.

Taiwan still wants F-16s and submarines
Taiwan has refuted a report saying that the island will not seek to buy submarines from the United States.

Taiwan's defence ministry spokesman Yu Sy-tue told AFP that the country is seeking both submarines and F-16s.

Reuters had reported earlier that the island had dropped its demands for submarines but will seek to buy F-16C/Ds.

U.S.-Taiwan Business Council wants Obama to clear F-16 sale to Taiwan
The president of the U.S.-Taiwan Business Council is accusing U.S. President Barack Obama of compromising Taiwan's security by not selling F-16s to the island.

"If the Obama administration balks at providing replacement F-16 fighters to Taiwan, China will have won a major victory in the Taiwan Strait without firing a shot," the council president said. The updating of Taiwan's F-16 fleet was a "material response" to Beijing's own fighter modernization, he added.

American official: Taiwan needs to be patient on F-16 deal
American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Chairman Raymond F. Burghardt said Taipei should be patient while waiting for Washington's decision to sell F-16 fighters.

"No-one has ever rejected the idea of selling F-16s to Taiwan, nor has there ever been a formal decision that yes, we will do so. So we will see, " said Burghardt.

Taiwan says U.S. stalling on F-16 sale because of China
Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou said on Thursday that Washington is stalling on the decision to sell F-16s to Taiwan because of displeasure from China.

"We still hope to acquire F-16 jet fighters to replace the ageing fighters we have, but so far we haven't received a positive answer from the United States, partly because of the opposition from the Chinese," Ma told reporters.

U.S. Congresswoman to push for F-16 sale to Taiwan
U.S. President Barack Obama will be expecting a letter soon from U.S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley asking him to approve the sale of F-16C/D fighters to Taiwan.

Speaking at a conference, Berkley said that she was "going to make sure" that the Obama ­administration acted on the issue.

U.S. to consider F-16 sale to Taiwan after key officials settled in
The de facto U.S. ambassador in Taiwan said Friday the Obama administration will consider the sale of F-16s after key officials settle down on their jobs.

Stephen Young of the American Institute in Taiwan said the deal is being looked into by Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg, National Security adviser Jeffrey Bader, and Assistant Secretary of Defense Wallace Gregson.

F-16 sale to Taiwan could be imminent
The Obama administration could be close to approving a deal to sell F-16C/D fighters to Taiwan as an official from Mainland China is expected to visit Washington soon for talks on arms sale to Tawian.

Taipei Times reported that China's Taiwan Affairs Office Director Wang Yi will visit next week and both the U.S. State Department and the Chinese embassy are refusing to confirm the visit.

Taiwan is studying the possibility of upgrading its F-16A/Bs while waiting for Washington to approve the sale of F-16C/Ds.

The modernization package includes new APG-68(V)9 radar; upgrading the modular mission computer to the MMC-7000; and adding new color multifunction displays, the Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System, AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, a new internal electronic countermeasures jammer and advanced targeting pods.

Taiwan to reach consensus with US before issuing request for F-16s
Taiwan's Vice Defense Minister Chang Liang-jen told lawmakers that Taipei will try to reach a consensus with Washington before issuing a new request to buy 66 F-16C/D fighters.

Defense officials added that Taiwan may choose to upgrade its 150 F-16A/B fighters if the deal doesn't work out in the near future.

Taiwan's President urges U.S. to sell F-16Cs to island
Speaking via teleconferencing with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou on Wednesday called on the United States to supply advanced weapons such as the F-16C to the island.

"The delicate balance of the status quo is being shaken by the gross military imbalances across the (Taiwan) Strait. Therefore, I urge the United States to not hesitate to provide Taiwan with the necessary defensive arms as stipulated in the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) , " Ma said in a forum on the TRA.

Taiwan sends official to discuss F-16 sale with Obama team
An official from Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense was recently sent to Washington D.C. to discuss the sale of F-16C/D fighters with incoming U.S. President Barack Obama's team.

The article says Taiwan has information that China will complete its first aircraft carrier in 2015 and the F-16s and 8 submarines are needed to counter the carrier.

McCain Presses Bush To Sell F-16s To Taiwan
Republican presidential candidate John McCain wants the Bush administration to sell F-16 fighters that Taiwan has requested.

"The package will not include submarines or new F-16 aircraft. I urge the administration to reconsider this decision, in light of its previous commitment to provide submarines and America's previous sales of F-16s," McCain said in a statement.

American officials from the State and Defense Department has assured Parliament Speaker Wang Jin-pyng that there is no freeze in arms sales to Taiwan.

Wang said the sales are still being reviewed by various U.S. agencies for their approval but he urged them to speed up the process.

Arms freeze for Taiwan
Admiral Timothy Keating, commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, has confirmed that Washington has imposed an arms freeze on Taiwan.

Keating said officials "have reconciled Taiwan's current military posture, China's current military posture and strategy that indicates there is no pressing, compelling need for at this moment arms sales to Taiwan of the systems that we're talking about."

This confirms Taiwan's complains that Washington is refusing to sell 66 F-16C/D fighters to the island.

Top U.S. Officials Stalling Taiwan Arms Package
Washington Post cited unnamed sources saying Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley have frozen a $11 billion arms deal for Taiwan.

The paper said Taiwan's government had privately urged Washington not to send any formal notification to Congress while it hold talks with China this week.

The outgoing head of Taiwan's de facto embassy in Washington urged the United States on Tuesday to clear the sale of 66 F-16C/D fighters to the island.

"We believe that Taiwan's acquisition of additional F-16s ... will do much to enhance Taiwan's air defense and at the same time improve stability across the Taiwan Strait," Joseph Wu told Reuters in an emailed reply to a query.

U.S. Freezes $12B in Arms Sales to Taiwan
The Bush Administration has freeze arms notification to Congress of 30 Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopters, 60 Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, four Raytheon Patriot PAC-3 air defense missile batteries and 66 Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Block 50/52 fighters to Taiwan.

However it is not clear if the freeze will extend till the August Olympics or until a new U.S. President takes over.

Taiwan "ready to buy 60 warplanes from the US"
A Taiwanese lawmaker has refuted a news report that a senior U.S. official will travel to Taiwan to persuade incoming President Ma Ying-jeou to approve the purchase of F-16C/D fighter jets.

Lin Yu-fang, a member of the parliament's defence committee, said Taiwan is ready and will pass the budget once Washington approves the sale.

Taiwan's Deputy Defense Minister Ko Cheng-heng said the military are looking forward to purchasing 66 F-16 C/D fighters from the United States while Air Force Chief of Staff Major General Liu Chen-wu said the deal could be approved as early as June.

Liu was speaking to the legislature’s Diplomacy and National Defense Committee on Monday.

Taiwan's Ma backs buying new fighter jets from US
Taiwan's new President Ma Ying- jeou said Saturday before he won the election, that he supports the purchase of new F-16C/Ds.

'I support buying F-16 C/Ds because the F-16 A/Bs we bought are out of date,' Ma told reporters after casting his vote at a Taipei voting station near his home.

Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian told visiting U.S. Congressmen that United States should quickly approve the sale of 66 F-16C/D fighters to Taiwan.

'The parliament has already approved the budget for the purchase of the F-16C/D fighter jets. We hope the US government can approve the deal soonest in line with the Taiwan Relations Act,' Chen said.

U.S. business group faults Bush on Taiwan F-16 delay
The U.S.-Taiwan Business Council has criticized the Bush administration Friday of jeopardizing Taiwan's security by stalling a potential deal to sell 66 F-16C/D jets.

The business council represents about 100 U.S. companies doing business with Taiwan, including top U.S. military contractors such as Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Raytheon Co.

President urges approval of US fighter deal
Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian has urged Washington to sell Taiwan advanced F-16 C/D fighter jets as early as possible.

Speaking via videoconference to an audience at a Washington think tank on Thursday, Chen said that Taiwan's legislature had approved the budget for the F-16 procurement plan in the hopes that the US would begin price negotiations for the deal next month.

However the current administration is delaying the issue until Taiwan's presidential election is over next year.

KMT says Chen's UN bid has derailed US sales of F-16s
A group of Taiwan opposition lawmakers say President Chen Shui-bian's push for a referendum on the nation's bid to join the U.N. under the name "Taiwan" has derailed the sale of 66 F-16C/Ds.

They told a press conference that the Washington had decided to put off approval of the sale to Taiwan because of the U.N. bid, without giving the source of the information.
