Taiwan's recent missile tests failed
Media reports from Taiwan said a missile test on Tuesday at the Chiupeng base in southern Taiwan had failed as the missile failed to fire.

Military officials did not deny that there was a failure but refused to provide further details.

Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou observes secret missile tests
Media reports in Taiwan say the island has tested several types of missiles on Tuesday with President Ma Ying-jeou observing the exercise.

Liberty Times said the Hsiung Feng 2E land attack cruise missile, Hsiung Feng 3 supersonic anti-ship missile and Skybow 3 surface-to-air missile were fired.

The United Daily News reported that the test included a new top-secret medium-range ballistic missile.

Taiwan continues develop of Hsiung Feng 2E LACM
Taiwan's Minister of National Defense Chen Chao-min said the development of the Hsiung Feng II-E LACM is still continuing when asked by a lawmaker.

"The development of Hsiung Feng II-E was approved by the legislature. The development will continue unless the legislature passes a resolution stopping it."

"We see the Hsiung Feng II-E as a defensive weapon, which would be used to attack an enemy’s military bases to delay its military action in wartime," he said.

Americans block sale of parts for Hsiung Feng IIE
The latest edition of Defense News said Washington is trying to block the sale of parts need to manufacture the Hsiung Feng IIE cruise missile to Taiwan.

The State Department is block the sale to Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology as it views the missile as an offensive weapon and is not covered under the Taiwan Relations Act.

However, after the report came out, China Times said Taiwan had sourced the parts from an unidentified European country and Israel. Thus the production of the missile could go ahead without delays.

Hsiung Feng 2E production approved
Three hundred Hsiung Feng 2E cruise missiles will be produced under orders from Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou.

The military will deploy the missiles with two units and there are plans to improve the missile to boost its range to 800km from 600km.

Taiwan not developing cruise missile capable of hitting Shanghai
In a bid to improve its relationship with mainland China, Taiwan has decided not to develop a version of the Hsiung Feng 2E cruise missile with a 1,000km range.

China Times said that however, two versions of the Hsiung Feng 2E with a range of 600 and 800km will be mass-produced.

Taiwan parliament restores budget for cruise missile production
Taiwan's lawmakers has restored the budget to mass produce the Hsiung Feng 2E land attack cruise missile.

United Daily News said the parliament's Diplomatic and Defence Committee restored the budget on Thursday evening. A request to upgrade the missile's capabilities by the lawmakers were into consideration by the military.

The newspaper added that Taiwan may turn to Russia to source for the missile's components as the United States is unwilling to provide the necessary parts for production.

Chinese naval moves worry Taiwan
Here is the transcript of an interview by Yomiuri Shimbun with Taiwan's vice defense minister, Ko Chen-heng, which mentions the Hsiung Feng 2E missile and China's acquisition of aircraft carriers.

Could you tell us about a deployment plan for Hsiung-Feng [Brave Wind] 2-E missiles?

I won't deny there's a development plan, but can't say whether it has been completed. It's "under development," I should say. The range cannot be publicized, but they aren't intended to strike civilian targets such as in Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Taiwan mollifies US with weapons pledge
Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian said his country will only use its Hsiung Feng 2E cruise missile after consulting Washington in a future conflict.

Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian says he will call for a public debate on Taiwan's defense policy, if the opposition rejects funding for the Hsiung Feng 2E cruise missile.

MND denies United States may sell Tomahawks
The Hsiung Feng 2E has been much in the news recently, now Taiwan's Defense Minister Lee Tien-yu has denied a report by China Times that the United States may sell Tomahawk cruise missiles to Taiwan if the latter is capable of mass producing the Hsiung Feng 2E cruise missile.

A military source also told the China Times that Taiwan acquired the cutting-edge Hsiung Feng 2E technology through a European country during its development.

Taiwan researching graphite bombs
Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense confirmed reports that it is researching into graphite bombs but denied that it is producing them.

United Daily News had earlier reported that the Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology is developing the bomb to be carried by Hsiung Feng 2E cruise missiles.

They will be used to target China's power grid during a war to blackout cities on the mainland coast.

Taiwan denies its cruise missile under development could carry nuclear warhead
Taiwan's Defense Ministry has refuted claims by an Opposition lawmaker that the ministry is planning to arm the Hsiung Feng 2E cruise missile with a nuclear warhead.

"We've clearly stated in our defense white paper not to produce, develop, acquire, store or use nuclear or biochemical weapons," the Defense Ministry said on its Web site.

Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian also dismissed the claim. He said there are no nuclear missiles in Taiwan and his administration will not develop one.

Hsiung Feng II-E missiles have been deployed: sources
Taipei Times reported that Taiwan may have deployed a small number of Hsiung Feng 2E cruise missiles.

It added that up to 100 of the missiles will be manufactured within the next eight years.

Separately, Taiwan opposition lawmakers have voted to slash the budget to produce the missiles.

Lawmakers from the Nationalist Party feared approval of the missile's production budget would anger China.

China Times reported Friday that Taiwan has promised the United States that it will not use the Hsiung Feng 2E cruise missile against China.

Taiwan Defense Minister Lee Tien-yu said Monday that the Hsiung Feng-2E cruise missile will not be on display tomorrow.

Instead the supersonic Hsiung Feng-3 anti-ship missile and the Tien Kung-3 anti-tactical ballistic missile will be on display for the first time.

The U.S. State Department has been dragging its feet when approving the export of sensitive military components to Taiwan.

The department is worried that such components could end up in Taiwan's Hsiung Feng 2E land attack cruise missile and the usual approval period has lengthen from four months to one year.

Taiwan to showcase military 'deterrent' in rare parade: minister
Taiwan's defence minister Lee Tien-yu said Wednesday that that the military will exhibit its "deterrent" against China in a parade next week. His remarks further fuel rumors that the island will display its Hsiung Feng 2E land-attack cruise missile for the first time.

"The display of military equipment is a kind of effective deterrent, so that the Chinese communists would be aware that Taiwan is tough," Lee said.

Japanese report says cruise missile will be displayed
Taiwan's Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng seems to have unwittingly revealed that the Hsiung Feng IIE cruise missile will be displayed for the first time on Double Ten National Day.

Meanwhile, a defense analyst has said that Washington will try to hamper the development of the missiles by withholding sophisticated satellite guidance technology from the Taiwanese military.

"The US has objected to Taiwan developing mid- to long-range missiles, fearing it could embolden the island's authorities to take more provocative policies toward China," said Wang Kao-cheng, professor of strategic studies of Tamkang University.

Weapons debut at National Day military rehearsal
The Hsiung Feng-3 anti-ship missiles and the Hsiung Feng-2E cruise missiles failed to make an appearance during a rehearsal for Taiwan's National Day.

There will be three more rehearsals at the Presidential Office on Oct. 3, 6, and 9. However officials refused to comment if the missiles will make an appearance.

China's neighbors could pressurized Washington to sell 66 F-16C/Ds to Taiwan in order to stabilize the region.

However Taiwan may have to give up its development of its Hsiung Feng 2E (Brave Wind) land attack cruise missile in exchange for the fighters.

Taiwan drill simulates Chinese aircraft carrier attack
Taiwan's annual Hankuang military drill has for the first time included China's first aircraft carrier in the simulations.

The defenders will use its Hsiung Feng II subsonic and III supersonic anti-ship missiles to attack the carrier group.

Washington is concerned about the exercise and Dennis Blair, former Commander-in-Chief of U.S. Pacific Command, is in Taiwan to observe the exercise.

Taiwan completes development of HF-III supersonic anti-ship missile
Janes has picked up the story on Taiwan's Hsiung Feng-III (HF-III) anti-ship missile. Pictures of the missiles on a Cheng Kung-class frigate at Suao Naval base has flooded the internet forums recently.



Apparently the photos were taken during a public open house at the base on Jul. 22. The missile was suppose to make its debut at the recent "Han Kuang 22" but was cancelled due to typhoons.

Taiwan to Test Missile Capable of Hitting China, ET Today Says
Taiwanese online newspaper ET Today said Taipei will test fire its Hsiung Feng III missile at a ceremony in September attended by President Chen Shui-bian in the south of the island.

Washington has has voiced concerns to Taipei as the missile exceeds the 300-kilometer "limit" under the Missile Technology Control Regime.

雄三超音速反艦飛彈 明年量產
Taiwan's Liberty Times reported that the defence ministry has drafted a five-year project called Zhui Feng (Pursuing Wind) to produce 130 Hsiung Feng III supersonic anti-ship missiles from next year.

The major objective is to fend off a possible attack from the aircraft carrier Varyag that China currently posses.

The missiles will be deployed on frigates and patrol boats and each ship will be armed with four missiles.

Taiwan will be the third country after China and India to deploy supersonic anti-ship missiles in Asia.

Taiwan's decision to produce no less than 500 Hsiung Feng, or Brave Wind, 2E cruise missiles by 2010 may tempt China toward taking preemptive military action in the 2008-2010 period.

The massive cruise missile force, with its 360-mile range, deployed on Taiwan would put Hong Kong and Shanghai, the financial hub of China, in danger.

Taiwan has produced three prototypes of cruise missile - Jane's
Taiwan has produced three prototypes of the Hsiung Feng 2E which could be used to strike the east coast of China.

Plans are for the production of up to 50 missiles before 2010 and up to 500 missiles after 2010, according to Jane's Defence Weekly.

Taiwan modifies aircraft to carry anti-ship missiles: report
Two AT-3A Tsu Chiang trainers have been converted to carry either Harpoon or Hsiung Feng II anti-ship missiles by Aerospace Industrial Development Corp.

Jane's Defence Weekly said the move will threaten China's main ports.

The AT-3A was originally designed and built as two-seater trainers for the RoCAF in the 1980s.

Locally developed misssile successfully test fired, report says
Taiwan has developed and successfully test fired surface-to-surface missiles that could hit coastal or interior Chinese cities, a newspaper reported yesterday. The missiles, dubbed Hsiung-feng 2A and Hsiung-feng 2E, have ranges between 150 to 300 kilometers, the mass-market Liberty Times said, citing unidentified military sources.
