First man to break Mach 4, 5 and 6 passed away Retired Maj. Gen. Robert White, who broke Mach 4, 5 and 6 in the X-15, has passed away peacefully on Wednesday.

White was also the first person to send the X-15 into space at 59 miles above the earth.
